For many users, keyboard shortcuts are not just a convenience—they are a vital tool for accessing and navigating digital spaces. We've integrated a range of keyboard shortcuts into the Univer.se Web App to ensure that everyone can build and manage their site with ease.
Standard Browser Controls
Before diving into the specifics of our app, it's essential to note that we've maintained compatibility with standard browser keyboard controls. This means that some of the navigation within our web app can be performed with familiar keystrokes:
- Tab: Move forward through links, inputs, and controls.
- Shift + Tab: Move backward through the same elements.
- Enter Key: Activate buttons and other interactive elements.
Navigating the Grid
Once you've started editing a page (we call the Editor "the grid") the following keyboard commands become your tools for creating and arranging content:
- Tab / Shift + Tab: Navigate between blocks. This allows you to move through the elements of your website sequentially.
- Arrow Keys: A secondary option for navigation. With these keys, you can move freely up, down, left, or right across the grid.
- Enter Key: When a block is highlighted, the Enter key allows you to select and edit a block. This command brings up the palette for the selected block, allowing you to modify content directly.
- Space Key: “Pick up” or “drop” a block. This innovative feature enables you to rearrange blocks by lifting them out of their current position (pick up) and placing them elsewhere (drop).
- Arrow Keys (while a block is “picked up”): Move a picked-up block to a new position in the grid. Once the block is in the desired location, the space key will drop the block in this position.
- Esc Key: When a block is selected or a block palette is open, the escape key will close that view and enables you to navigate between blocks again.
